Best Writing Advice #7 -- Fix it...and Fuhgeddaboudit!

Mistakes, mistakes, mistakes!

As humans, we all make them. As people, we regret them. As authors, we tattoo them to our souls, clinging endlessly to the memory of each one like a gum to the bottom of a favorite shoe.

It's true. I've made so many mistakes in my writing career, I can't even begin to count my mistakes. From typos to misnaming a file and accidentally publishing the uncorrected proof version (UGGGGH), I've done it all. And I'm telling you I felt some kind of awful. Sometimes even get into a mild depression until I kick my own butt and tell myself to snap out of it.

There's nothing I can do about what has happened in the past. Nothing. I can only do what I can do from this moment and move forward from there. That's it. Once this reality soaked through my thick skull, I take my mistakes much more gracefully. I've learned to LAAFF when I make mistakes (I'll tell what that means shortly).

There's something unique about artists who bare their souls to the world in the written word...to only find out or masterpiece, our inspired tome, our pièce de résistance is marred by a typo (or, God forbid, a LOT of them), poor structure, grammar issues or the host of authory issues--or ALL the issues at once!

Oh, and then what's better? In most professions, you can quietly correct your mistake and pretend like it never happened. Not authors. Nooooo, uh uh. We get the pleasure of finding out about our mistakes from a reader in a 1-star review that will be associated with the book for ETERNITY.

You want to talk about life sucking? I've felt less pain in 27 hours of labor.

Fact of the matter is--Sh!t Happens. If you're the writing game for the long haul, you better get used to the smell of it because it's gunning for you. Barrels loaded, triggers cocked, and ready to fire. A sh!t storm is coming near YOU. You or someone else will point out your icky boo boo and there's not a dang thing you can do except - LAAFF.

Learn from it.
Acknowledge it.
Apologize.
Fix it...and
Fuhgeddaboudit!!

Remember that--LAAFF. Sure, you'll still make a sh!tload of mistakes. But with a couple timely shots of vodka and a lot of LAAFFing, you will be able to deal with them much more gracefully.
